No. 1 CUI Splits Saturday Games in Turlock

Morris Tosses Complete Game Against Western Oregon

TURLOCK, Calif. - The top-ranked team in the country bounced back from its first losses of the year to top Western Oregon and earn a split of its two Saturday games at the Tournament of Champions.

Concordia improved to 37-3 overall and will finish out its stay up north with its fifth and final game of the tournament on Sunday morning against Cal Poly Humboldt at 9 a.m.

Game 1:  CUI 7, Western Oregon 1

Starting pitcher Erika Morris tossed a gem against the Wolves and limited them to just four hits and one earned run.  She pitched a complete game, struck out four and improved to 9-1 on the season.

The Eagles staked Morris to a 5-0 lead in the second inning when the offense came alive by being selective at the plate.  After loading the bases, Michalah Robison, Lauren Lopez and Megan Massa all walked in a run by not chasing pitches out of the strike zone.  The lead ballooned from 3-0 to 5-0 for the Eagles as the inning continued on a RBI single by Mia Saucedo and a sacrifice fly by Sydney Sprinkle.

Shelli Faulk had two hits as the starting first baseman and added a RBI single on a bunt in the fifth inning. Two runs actually scored on the play after a throwing error.

Game 2: Cal State Monterey Bay 4, CUI 2

Concordia scored a run in both the first inning and the seventh inning against the Otters.

Unfortunately, the Eagles couldn't get any runs across the plate in those five innings sandwiched between them and wound up on the wrong end of a 4-2 decision.

It wasn't the cleanest game for either defense as the each team wound up with three charged errors.

Katlin Entrup (14-1) suffered her first loss of the season and allowed four unearned runs. She struck out six batters across four frames before Cortney Koelmans entered the circle and tossed two shutout innings down the stretch to keep CUI in the contest.

Megan Massa led the CUI offense against the Otters with a pair of hits including a double.

Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Rylie Rohr helped the cause with a RBI single up the middle to cut the deficit to 4-2. But with the tying runs on base, the Eagles ran out of time to complete the comeback and the Otters pulled off the upset.
