IRVINE, Calif. – After playing on the road against USC Friday, the Concordia University Irvine men's volleyball team were looking for a home court advantage Saturday. The Eagles played hard but ultimately fell in three sets with scores 25-23, 25-20, and 33-31.
The third set was a nail biter as the Eagles knew they needed to win in order to keep the match alive. The Green and Gold jumped out to an early lead but the Trojans kept creeping back into the set. An ace from USC gave them a one point advantage until a hitting error and kill from Carlson put the score at 24 a-piece. Serving errors from the Trojans kept the Eagles in the match and another kill from Carlson gave them a 31-30 advantage. USC finished out the match earning the next three points to win 33-31.
Blocking was a huge factor the Eagles as
Gil Herold led them with one solo and seven block assists that came at clutch points to stop the Trojans. Herold finished with four kills on eight attempts hitting a .500 while
Mason Mullins contributed with two kills and racking up two aces.
Senior
Owen Chun put up big blocks as well earning another solo block and three assists that led to Eagle points. He also added another 10 kills which marks his ninth match hitting double-digits in kills.
Logan Glave had a solid six kills that went off the Trojan block for a point and came up big on two blocks from the opposing teams right side hitter. Glave was passing dimes all night long and was no match for the Trojans as he saw a lot of receptions.
Jonathan Carlson threw down nine hard kills and another ace in favor of the Eagles.
Erik Boisvert was in the libero jersey and scooped up six digs and passed perfection alongside Glave and Carlson.
McLain Mott dished out 16 assists while
Makai Lipson was right behind with 11. Lipson also recorded a career-high of two aces that could not be received by the Trojans.
