BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Following an outstanding performance against No. 10 Western Washington Tuesday night, the traveling Golden Eagles faced off against Simon Fraser University on Thursday to conclude their pre-conference trip.
Thursday's match is the fourth meeting between the two teams, and the Golden Eagles looked to extend their win streak to four against our neighbors to the north.
It was a different look from the Golden Eagles game earlier in the week, with the green and gold dominating from the first whistle. After the first forty-five minutes, CUI had taken eight shots while keeping Simon Fraser from seeing their net entirely offensively.
However, the game remained scoreless, with the opposing keeper stepping up big for her squad to keep them in the game with three saves.
The second half played out similarly, with the Golden Eagles planting themselves in the other teams defensive half, finding early chances to take the lead. As the game reached the final ten minutes, CUI earned a corner that saw
Jadenn Carrillo crossing the ball into the cluster of defenders.
Brianna Guerra placed her head underneath and redirected it into the far post, finally putting them ahead.
Freshman keeper
Riley Uruquiza, who earned her second start of the season, didn't see much action throughout the match but still collected a single save to secure the first clean sheet of her career.
Without a response from SFU, the green and gold collected their second win of the season and remained undefeated in three games.
Carrillo led the team with five shots and earned her first assist this season.
Analisa Gjonovich and
Layla Comeaux both tallied three shots in the win and helped dominate the midfield with sophomore
Olivia Ocampo.
The Golden Eagles are back in action next week, September 8th, taking on Cal State Los Angeles in another road matchup against a CCAA opponent.
