CUI Wrestles With Gators In Non-Conference Match

Walkington Nets Breakaway Goal Against Gators

IRVINE, Calif. - The Concordia University Irvine women's soccer team erased an early deficit and outshot the visiting San Francisco State Gators on Wednesday, but ultimately walked away with a frustrating result.

San Francisco State escaped with a 2-1 win in their non-conference affair as the Golden Eagles had more set pieces and racked up 19 shots to 17 for the Gators.

Senior Riley Walkington net the equalizer in the 12th minute of action to fire up the home crowd, which included members of the Flight Club student section.  The Sandpoint, Idaho native stole the ball for Concordia in the middle of the field and immediately went on the offensive.  Walkington capitalized on the aggressiveness of the opposing keeper and quickly bounced a shot over her head to stun the visitors and make it 1-1. The Gators had initially taken the lead in the eighth minute on a tic-tac-toe sequence that opened the scoring.

Mya Stice came off the bench to give a spark in both halves along with Madison Hall and Hailey Havican. Stice almost scored in the first half when she sent a bouncer past the keeper that just grazed the left post and bounced the wrong way for the Golden Eagles.

Analisa Gjonovich made the Gators nervous with a couple of opportunities that narrowly missed giving CUI its second goal of the afternoon. Jadenn Carrillo also proved to be dangerous on multiple free kicks but San Francisco State was able to curb that enthusiasm and dodge any further damage.  The Gators ultimatley found the go-ahead goal in the 74th minute on a rebound by Rosalyn Olamit off another shot and then held on to the final horn.

Concordia goalkeeper Riley Urquiza came up with six saves to help the Golden Eagles stay in the match.  Five of those stops came in the first half for the true freshman from Huntington Beach High School, who was recently named PacWest Defender of the Week.

The Golden Eagles are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Point Loma for a non-conference meeting scheduled for 1 p.m. The CUI men's soccer squad will also play at Point Loma that day as part of a doubleheader.  Both CUI teams are back home next on Saturday, Sept. 24 against Biola in a non-conference doubleheader that begins with the women playing at 3:30 p.m. and the men at 6:30 p.m.
