SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Golden Eagles continued play at the Seaside Invitational hosted by Point Loma on Friday playing a double header against San Francisco State and Cal Poly Pomona. CUI lost the first match against SFSU in four sets with scores 25-15, 17-25, 24-26, 14-25. The next match against Cal Poly Pomona was a hard fought battle as they went to three sets 20-25, 20-25, 23-25.
CUI 1, SFSU 3
Kirra Schulz and libero
Julia Wilson starting out strong with CUI as they went both went on service runs to take a commanding lead over the Gators. Schulz served up two aces during her stint at the back line and three consecutive attacking errors during Wilson at the line. The next two sets went in favor of the Gators as they held the lead from the Golden Eagles until the end of each set. The Green and Gold gave SFSU a challenge in the third set as they were able to come within just one and go in extra points.
The fourth set looked to be in favor of SFSU, until
Kennedy Farley went to the service line and added two aces along with a few errors from their opponents to take a 8-6 lead. Two long runs from the Gators secured their win over the Golden Eagles.
Schulz finished with another 13 kills and 20 digs, making that her third consecutive match with 13 kills and second consecutive with 20 digs.
Daniela Poles and Farley each contributed with five kills. Middles made their mark defensively as
Halli Hooks and
Caitlin Jarrell put up seven blocks a-piece and Hooks with three solo blocks.
The assists were split between three setters with
Michelle Feliciano putting up 15 assists,
Devin Sivertson with nine, and
Kawehi Chang finishing with seven. Libero Wilson scooped up 14 digs while the team collectively had 20 blocks defensively.
CUI 0, CPP 3
Schulz continued her momentum into the second match of the day as she secured another double-double night leading the Golden Eagles with 12 kills and 15 digs. Farley and
Danielle McCasland both added six kills and three blocks combined.
Chang led the offense with 13 assists and 10 digs while Feliciano was right behind with 11 assists and digs. Wilson dug up nine while setting up five assists for her hitters. Jarrell came up at big moments for CUI as she had three key blocks for the team.
After the Golden Eagles lost the first two sets, they rallied in the third to take a late one point lead over the Broncos, forcing them to take a timeout. After the timeout, Cal Poly closed out the match earning the last four consecutive points.
CUI will finish the Seaside Invitational Saturday, Sept. 3 as they take on Cal State San Marcos at 2:30 p.m. for the second time this season. The Golden Eagles move to 2-4 on the season and will start PacWest play the following week on the road starting with Dominican Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. in San Rafael, Calif.
