AZUSA, Calif. - PacWest play opened up Friday night for women's soccer with the Golden Eagles matching up against a resilient Azusa Pacific squad. The Green and Gold entered the conference portion of their schedule with an impressive 5-2-1 record, while the Cougars held a 3-2-2 record.
Much of the first half played out within the midfield with both teams struggling to find threatening chances in front of the net. But it was the home team that found success at applying pressure offensively, keeping Riley Urquiza on her toes with two shots on target. Urquiza minimized the danger, holding the Cougars off the scoreboard.
The Golden Eagles came out of the break with a greater desire to put the Cougars on their heels. Analisa Gjonovich and Brianna Guerra were the only two Golden Eagles to collect on target shots, combining for a total of three. On of those chances, Gjonovich actually sent an untouched screamer that just nicked the top left part of the crossbar and was very close to being the game-winner.
However, it was an offensive struggle for both sides as neither team could break the deadlock, and the game concluded with a scoreless draw. Urquiza made six saves and helped lead the defensive line in minimizing all the danger, earning her second shutout of the year.
The Green and Gold now boast a record of 5-2-2, with nine games remaining in the season.
The next game for the women's soccer team is a road match in Oakland, taking on the Hawks of Holy Names next Thursday, October 6th.
