Caroms Help Golden Eagles Cage Cougars

CUI Earns First Win in Comeback Fashion

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine men's soccer squad earned its first victory of this young regular season on Wednesday afternoon, ambushing Cal State San Marcos with three late goals to complete a thrilling comeback.

The Golden Eagles trailed the Cougars 1-0 at halftime but rallied in the final 20 minutes of action.

Klaus Huovila sent a sharp throw-in to the heart of the box in the 74th minute of action. The ball bounced briefly away from a crowd directly to Brett Lux who let it fly and tucked a nifty strike past the diving keeper in the lower left corner of the goal.

It was the second goal of Lux's CUI career and his first of the 2022 regular season.

Shortly after Lux net the equalizer, sophomore goalkeeper Andre Flores kept the game tied by stopping a free kick shot to the left side of the Concordia goal.

The match remained knotted 1-1 until the 81st minute.  Anthony Morales drew a free kick for the Golden Eagles and Huovila took the set piece. The ball caromed off the keeper and Alfonso Montano used his head to react quickly and surprise the Cougars with the go-ahead goal. It proved to be the game-winner and also doubled as Montano's first goal as a Golden Eagle.

In the final minute before the horn, the Golden Eagles flew away after negating the CSUSM final attack with the icing on the cake. On a breakaway, Alex Perez dropped off a pass to Morales who scored a goal of his own to put this one to bed.  CUI closed the match with three goals in the final 20 minutes to post its first win of the year by a count of 3-1.

Flores finished with two saves and notched his first win of the year in goal.

CUI hosts Cal Poly Pomona this Saturday, Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m. for its next non-conference tilt following the women's soccer home opener against Cal State Dominguez Hills that begins at 3:30 p.m.
