IRVINE, Calif. - On Saturday night, the Concordia University Irvine men's soccer team faced off the No. 15 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos. The Golden Eagles looked to defend their home turf coming off a comeback victory against San Marcos.
The opening minutes of the first half set the tone for what proved to be a physical match between the two squads. In the 22nd minute the Broncos were able to get on the board and keep the Golden Eagle attack at bay to end the half up one goal.
Concordia did not back down as they forced multiple set pieces to open up the second half putting Cal Poly's defense to the test. Later, the Broncos were able to capitalize off this aggressive tactic and found the back of the net twice off of counterattacks.
The game ended in a 3-0 win for Cal Poly Pomona, but the Golden Eagles were able to get quality chances thanks to their 14 shots on the day.
Alex Perez kept the Broncos busy, taking seven shots, including a stellar header off a strong throw from Klaus Huovila.
The Golden Eagles will be traveling up north this Thursday, Sept. 15th, as they open their road trip against Western Washington.
