IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine women's soccer squad is off to a solid 2-0-1 start after picking up wins over Cal Poly Pomona and Simon Fraser in the first couple weeks of the regular season.
Perhaps the most impressive result came last Tuesday, when
CUI traveled north and stunned No. 10 Western Washington with a late goal to force a 1-1 draw in front of the WWU home crowd.
All these efforts were recognized by the PacWest Conference as the league named CUI the PacWest Team of the Week.
Freshman goalkeeper
Riley Urquiza was also tabbed as PacWest Defender of the Week after she and her teammates allowed just one goal in two matches during their road trip to the Pacific Northwest.
Against the Vikings,
Layla Comeaux scored off a corner kick from
Olivia Ocampo in the final 10 minutes of regulation to erase a 1-0 deficit that CUI had faced since the first five minutes of the match.
Briana Guerra net the game-winning goal against Simon Fraser off an assist from
Jadenn Carrillo. Concordia outshot the newly-named Red Leafs 16-2 and
Urquiza notched the first clean sheet of her college career.
CUI takes its unblemished record into Thursday's road contest at Cal State LA with kickoff set for 7 p.m. in Los Angeles.
After the battle of the Golden Eagles, CUI will hold its home opener this Saturday, Sept. 10 at 3:30 p.m. against Cal State Dominguez Hills. That will be followed by the men's second home match of the year which starts at 6:30 p.m. against Cal Poly Pomona under the lights.
