IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine men's volleyball team played against Menlo College for the first time in program history and earned their first win in four with scores 24-26, 25-17, 25-23, and 25-17. The Golden Eagles offense shined throughout the match as the team finished the match with 62 kills compared to Menlo College with 49.
Senior
Uriel Batista earned a career-high of 23 kills breaking his previous record Wednesday night of 22. Batista led the Golden Eagles with his 23 kills and 11 digs. Batista served up one of the two aces for the Golden Eagles that went untouched.
Middles were impressive tonight as
Maxwell McCullough and
Gil Herold combined for 14 kills. McCullough was unstoppable on offense with a hitting percentage of .727 and Herold at .455. McCullough put up five block assists along with two solo while Herold had one of each.
Outside hitters
Gage Doble and
Johnny Anselmo collected 13 and 10 kills respectively. Anselmo hit an impressive .421 while Doble had four digs and three block assists.
Nathan Biteau dished out an impressive 48 assists in just four sets and scooped up 10 digs for CUI. Freshman libero
Jacob Reilly was all over the court Thursday collecting 10 digs. Reilly was covering his pin hitters and picked up a lot of balls to save the rallies.
The Golden Eagles move to 3-1 on the season and take on No. 7 UC Irvine the next two nights. CUI will be at UC Irvine Friday, Jan. 20 and be back in the CU Arena Saturday, Jan. 21 with a slated time at 7 p.m. for both.
