ORANGE, Calif. - Moving on from the Lancer Invite, the Concordia University Irvine men's water polo team traveled to Orange and Fullerton to finish out the weekend. The two games of the day were against Chapman (3 p.m.) and Cal State Fullerton (7:00 p.m.). As of Saturday morning, Concordia had an overall record of 7-11. It was a challenging and competitive day for the Golden Eagles as they faced the Panthers and the Titans.
CHAPMAN (12-14)
On a powerplay, Dawson Brummett scored the first CUI goal in the beginning of the match. After a few minutes, Jacob Stuart and Sam Diamond added more goals to the CUI board, both on powerplays. Harry Bentham made his presence known in the second period with back-to-back goals to tie the score 5-5. Chapman snuck in goal after goal in the third period to secure their lead. At the start of the fourth period, Bentham set off with renewed energy and scored two more goals for the Golden Eagles. On a penalty shot, Jacob Stuart scored, making the it CUI 9, CHAP 12. It was getting too close. After a few shots, Leo Erickson added a goal to the board for CUI as well. Tanner Powell played most of the match, but Jace Peterson switched caps and played goalie for the last few minutes of the game. The Panthers had secured the lead at this point. Not giving up, Kaliq Khan made back-to-back goals in the final minute to close the gap.
Chapman won with a final score of 12-14.
CAL STATE FULLERTON (16-8)
Despite Fullerton's quick offense, Harry Bentham scored the first CUI goal on a powerplay and another goal not too long after. For every Titan shot, there was a Golden Eagle shot to match it. In the second period, Xander Luckett added a goal to the CUI board on a powerplay with an excellent assist from Leo Erickson. The Titans managed to outscore Concordia every period but the Golden Eagles never stopped battling. With the offense spread out, Jacob Stuart, Relja Mitic, Sam Diamond, Jace Peterson, and Oscar Garcia Blomback each scored a goal for Concordia before the game's end. The offensive leader for CUI was Bentham with two goals, an assist, and two steals. Tanner Powell had three saves and Hunter Osgood made a daring save as well.
By the end of it all, Cal State Fullerton won with a final score of 16-8.
As of Saturday Oct. 14, men's water polo's overall record is 7-13. The Green and the Gold will compete against Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 3 p.m, where the Golden Eagles will be on the hunt for their next win.
