RIVERSIDE, Calif. - It's been a busy week for the Concordia University Irvine men's water polo team. After competing against Biola on Wed. Oct 4, the Golden Eagles traveled to Riverside for the Lancer Invite on Friday Oct. 6. The two games of the day were against UC Merced (10 a.m.) and Loyola Marymount (2:10 p.m.).
UC MERCED (13-9)
At the start of the game, Dawson Brummet won the sprint against the Bobcats to kick off possession. Harry Bentham scored the first goal of the game for CUI. And in a close minute, Jace Peterson scored the next goal for the Golden Eagles on a penalty shot. By the end of the first period, it was tied 3-3. CUI continued to outscore UC Merced in each period. Both Jacob Stuart and Sam Diamond got in on the action and pushed past the Bobcats' defense. Kaliq Khan scored the last CUI goal before the game ended.
Leaders for CUI were Jace Peterson, Harry Bentham, and Stan De Mey with 3 goals each. De Mey also contributed three assists and two steals.
Concordia won with a final score of 13-9.
LOYOLA MARYMOUNT (13-19)
Concordia entered the next match with high energy. Sam Diamond won the sprint and the game was on. The Golden Eagles outscored Loyola in the first period 4-2. It wasn't until the second period that Loyola pushed ahead. Tanner Powell had five saves in the beginning of the match, and Hunter Osgood made his presence known with a few saves of his own.
Sophomore Bentham led the Concordia offense with four goals and two steals. Diamond and Stuart added two goals each and many well-placed assists for the Golden Eagles.
By the end of it all, Loyola Marymount won with a final score of 19-13.
The Green and Gold will compete against Cuesta College (Exhibition) and Westcliff next at the Lancer Invite on Saturday, Oct. 7.
The action starts at 10 a.m. and 2:10 p.m.
