Good Knight: No. 12 CUI Blanks Eighth Straight Opponent

Russo Records First Brace; Venegas & Gould Net First Goals

IRVINE, Calif. – It's crazy eights for the nationally-ranked Concordia women's soccer team!

No. 12 Concordia University Irvine scored a season-high six goals and locked down its eight straight shutout victory on Saturday.

The home crowd also saw multiple freshmen net their first career goals as the Golden Eagles secured a 6-0 romp over Academy of Art.

Goalkeepers Riley Urquiza and Erica Ihlein each played a half and combined for the clean sheet. The ball was mainly on one side of the pitch as CUI showed they could maintain possession for large chunks of the match.

Olivia Ocampo net the first goal to open the scoring in the 26th minute on a penalty kick. Riley Walkington also capitalized on a penalty kick to give CUI a boost.

Freshman Antonella Russo scored twice for her first career brace. Russo's first goal came off pristine passes from fellow freshmen Sarah Venegas and Bella Barrett to make it 2-0 shortly before halftime.

An awesome highlight from this match came midway through the second half when Russo stole the ball on the Urban Knights side of the pitch, dribbled a few steps and then uncorked a curving beauty of a shot off the far post that deflected in the net.  That made it 4-0 and gave way to a few more substitutions.

Nicole Ihlein joined her twin sister Erica on the field in the second half and helped CUI continue to keep possession for long stretches.

First-year players Haylee Gould and Sarah Venegas each scored for the first time to the absolute thrill of their teammates. Ashlee Austin came on in the second half and booted a great ball to Venegas to put her in a good position to cash in. A few minutes later, Maya Little fed Gould who tapped in the last goal of the contest.

Gould also kept Concordia's shutout streak alive with a key heads-up play by stopping a potential goal from scoring in the final minutes.

Concordia hosts Dominican in its next home conference match this Monday, Oct. 9 at 1:30 p.m. That will be a part of a daytime doubleheader against the Penguins with the men playing the matinee at 11:00 a.m.
