CARSON, Calif. - Heading into the third game of the season for the Golden Eagles, they saw themselves on the road against Cal State Dominguez Hills Toro's.
After previously competing in the CCAA/PacWest Challenge, the Golden Eagles knew how hard CCAA schools could play after their first contest going into overtime against Cal State San Bernardino. CUI quickly went up by three points early in the first quarter, and then the Toro's quickly closed the gap to go on a first-quarter run. After that run, the Golden Eagles saw themselves down by 13 after one quarter of play.
In the second quarter of the game, there was a defensive mindset for both teams, with only 11 points being scored in the period. During this time, Golden Eagles center
Teagan Thurman scooped up two steals while forward
Hannah Vela wracked up two assists. CUI saw themselves down at the half 18-30.
To start the third quarter, the Golden Eagles fought to try and get themselves back into the game with a swift
Savannah Felix-Amoroso layup and a
Stephanie Lee three to get within seven points. That run was a great effort from the Golden Eagles, but they quickly saw themselves back down to a double-digit lead from the Toro. The Toro's offense did not falter, and CUI, unfortunately, could not combat the point differential to make the comeback and fell to CSUDH 42-60.
Noticeable players for the Golden Eagles in Wednesday's contest were
Savannah Felix-Amoroso, who scored 10 points on an efficient 4/6 from the field while grabbing eight rebounds and blocking four shots, and
Camryn Kiernan, who also scored 10 points while grabbing four boards for CUI.
