ARCATA, Calif. - The Golden Eagles were on the road in Saturday's evening action against Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks.
As the first quarter of play was underway, the Golden Eagles saw themselves shooting extremely efficient from the field. While shooting 75% from the field, CUI also made it extremely tough for the Lumberjacks to score anything, holding them to 37.5% from the field. The Golden Eagles edged out the lumberjacks with their play ending the first quarter 21-17.
Entering the second quarter, the Golden Eagles built a lead off a pair of three-point shots from
Izzy Navarro. CUI did not give up their lead the entire quarter and ended the first half up by ten with a score of 37-27.
Coming out of the half, CUI struck fast with two quick layups from
Savannah Felix-Amoroso. This jumpstarted a 13-4 offensive run for the Golden Eagles and put them up by 19 points midway through the third quarter. However, the Lumberjacks weren't going down without a fight. To combat that surge from CUI, they ended the third quarter on a 10-0 run to get the score within 54-42.
Building off of that offensive leverage from the end of the third quarter, the Lumberjacks kept the pressure on CUI. Opening up the 4th quarter with a 17-2 run, Cal Poly Humboldt drew within one of the Golden Eagles. The momentum did not stop there as the Lumberjacks navigated their way to a come-from-behind win by the final score of 72-63.
The Golden Eagles were led in scoring by freshman
Izzy Navarro, who had 15 points while handing out four assists.
Savannah Felix-Amoroso scored 11 points while grabbing seven boards and
Teagan Thurman added eight points and grabbed seven rebounds with two steals.
The home opener for the Golden Eagles is up next on the day after Thanksgiving.
CUI will host Simon Fraser, Point Loma and Northwest Nazarene for a two-day tournament featuring two non-conference games for all four schools. CUI faces Simon Fraser at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24 before Point Loma and NNU match up later that afternoon. CUI will then face Northwest Nazarene at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25 following the SFU-PLNU game which is slated to begin at noon.
