IRVINE, Calif. - On senior night, the Concordia University Irvine men's water polo team flew past Fresno Pacific University 13-7 to close out the week. It was a heart-warming event as both Concordia goalies, Tanner Powell and Hunter Osgood, as well as Garrett Ryder Wade were recognized for their careers and impact on the Golden Eagles.
Sam Diamond opened the scoring for CUI with a goal in the first minute of the match. With a pass from Tanner Powell, Leo Erickson added to Concordia's score. Nearing the end of the period, Stan De Mey fired a shot that managed to hit the back net after an assist from Diamond. It wasn't long before Leo Erickson snuck in another goal. The Sunbirds didn't get a single shot past Tanner Powell.
For the second time, Dawson Brummett turned on the jets and won the sprint for the Golden Eagles. Using the momentum from Brummett, Erickson and Jacob Stuart scored the next two CUI points. The Sunbirds found their rhythm and launched a few shots that resulted in two goals. Many shots bounced off the post for both teams, but Sam Diamond found the perfect moment to pass to Harry Bentham for a goal, making the score 7-2.
By the end of the game, Kaliq Khan, Carlos Olat, Erickson, Diamond and Bentham added more points to Concordia's scoreboard and contributed to the lead. There were many power plays and penalty shots called during the chaos. The Golden Eagles remained calm. The Sunbirds struggled to get past Tanner Powell in the first three periods, as well as senior Hunter Osgood in the final period with his two saves.
Senior Tanner Powell, recent WWPA Defensive Player of the Week, had eleven saves and six assists.
Offensively, Leo Erickson and Harry Bentham led the team with goals. Sam Diamond made his presence known with a career-high four assists. Concordia finished with a shot percentage of .542 and a final score of 13-7.
The Green and the Gold now approach the last conference match with a record of 2-2. Concordia completes regular season conference play on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at UC Irvine. Action starts at 6 pm!
