No. 5 CUI Settles For Tie Against Pesky HPU

PacWest Crown Still Up For Grabs

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – A late goal by Hawai'i Pacific thwarted CUI's chances of securing a full three points in the standings on Saturday night, as the first-place Golden Eagles settled for a 1-1 draw against the Sharks.

After soaring to their highest NCAA DII national ranking in program history, the No. 5 Golden Eagles jumped in front of the Sharks to stake themselves to an early lead.  Hailey Havican scored for Concordia in the 17th minute off a pass from Val Cortez to put the Green and Gold ahead for what would wind up being the majority of the contest.

CUI has smothered defenses all season and has nine clean sheets to its name.

However, in the 89th minute, after CUI was bleeding clock for quite awhile, HPU was able to send a screamer over the top of the defense and Caylie Uyema net the equalizer to throw a wrench in Concordia's plans of victory.

The result makes the final week of the regular season a bit of a muddled mess with five different PacWest teams still with a chance to claim at least a share of the conference crown.

Entering Monday, No. 5 CUI is in first place and still leads all the other programs with 20 points – but only has one game remaining. No. 13 Hawaii Hilo is in a similar situation with 19 points and only one match at Chaminade left on the regular season schedule.  Azusa Pacific also has one more chance at a win with 18 points in the conference standings.

In contrast, both Point Loma (18 points) and Westmont (17 points) have two games left – and thus a chance at securing up to six points if either was able to win two more times.  Two victories by either school would sew up the PacWest title.

Depending on the outcome of Wednesday's critical game when Westmont visits Point Loma, the Warriors could be vying with CUI for the regular season title.  CUI closes the regular season with a very important match up in Santa Barbara against Westmont next Saturday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. (Note: The match was moved up from its orginal start time of 3:15 p.m.)

If Point Loma wins that Wednesday match, CUI would need Fresno Pacific to help and prevent the Sea Lions from winning outright, regardless of Saturday's result between CUI and Westmont.

It should be an exciting and nail-biting week for all teams involved.  CUI ranked among the top five teams in last week's official west regional ranking and the top six programs advance to the regional playoffs.
