Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Jesse Elrod

Christmas Came Early For CUI

Lee & Vela Help Set The Tone; Navarro Leads All Scorers

IRVINE, Calif. - Looking to bounce back after the last game, CUI women's basketball took on the visiting Urban Knights from Academy of Art University on Monday afternoon.

To begin the contest, Stephanie Lee picked up right where she left off against Dominican by making two three-point back-to-back shots, assisted by Izzy Navarro on one of the three-point shots. These two players really shined throughout the rest of the game and set the tone for the entire team.

The Golden Eagles found themselves up big in the first quarter by more than 14 points, and the Urban Knights had to respond quickly. That response didn't come in the first quarter but rather in the last five minutes of the first half. The lead CUI built had shrunk to only six points entering the second half of play with some tenacious defense from the Urban Knights, but the Golden Eagles were still on top, leading 41-35.

Opening up the second half, CUI was now in an all-out dog fight with the Urban Knights. The Golden Eagles now saw themselves down by four points with 4:15 to play in the third quarter. Answering back with their own offensive run, CUI turned up the jets and got some crucial stops on defense that led to transition offense to put the Golden Eagles back on top by seven points entering the fourth.

The Golden Eagles eventually flexed their muscles against the Urban Knights to put together a 17-4 run. CUI did not look back after this run and ended up winning by more than 20 points with a final score of 85-63.

Key players for the Golden Eagles included freshman Izzy Navarro who scored 24 points, went 4-for-7 from downtown, and grabbed three boards and two steals. Lee recorded a season-high 19 points and knocked down five threes while shooting 50 percent from the field.

Teagan Thurman in her second game back from injury recorded a near double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Freshman guard Hannah Vela finished the game with nine points as well, while snatching up three steals and two assists coming off the bench while only playing 12 minutes during the contest.

Next up for CUI is a home date with Azusa Pacific on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 2 p.m. as their five-game home stand over Christmas break continues!
