IRVINE, Calif. – No. 19 Concordia University Irvine softball team faced Colorado Christian on Saturday in their third doubleheader of the week. Both games went into extra innings but unfortunately the Cougars were able to escape each time in 10 innings before catching their flight out of town.
The CUI pitching staff did an admirable job giving their squad a chance to win in both instances but ultimately the Cougars prevailed.
GAME 1: CCU 2, CUI 0
Designated hitter
Jocelyn Pino led the offense with two singles while
Mia Saucedo contributed one of her two base knocks on the day.
PacWest Pitcher of the Week Kaitlyn Entrup tossed a complete game and struck out three while navigating through nine scoreless innings before allowing two runs in the tenth.
GAME 2: CCU 3, CUI 2
Rae Flores started on the mound for the Golden Eagles in the rematch and went four innings with two runs.
Callie Nunes came into the game and pitched two scoreless innings with two strikeouts in relief. Graduate student
Daniela Alvarez was on the mound the final four innings and allowed just two hits and one run while striking out five.
CUI outhit CCU with 10 hits and leadoff hitter
Megan Massa went 4-for-5 and
Shelby Pfeiler put up two singles.
In the bottom of the seventh Sprinkle hit a two-run single to bring home Massa and Saucedo and force extra innings again. The Cougars are able to push across the deciding run in the top of the tenth to spoil a solid day by the Golden Eagles pitching staff.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action Sunday, Feb. 12 as they take on San Francisco State in a doubleheader match-up with slated times 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
