IRVINE, Calif. – The nationally-ranked Concordia Golden Eagles improved to 10-4 on the young season with an impressive display of pitching and defense in a rare Sunday doubleheader with San Francisco State.
Four CUI pitchers combined to keep the Gators from scoring any runs the entire day. They got some fantastic help from their defense as well with multiple Gators getting tagged out at home plate trying to score.
Game 1: CUI 8, SFSU 0 (6 innings)
The offense came alive to put the Golden Eagles in control of this one.
Shelby Pfeiler hoisted a solo shot in the bottom of the second inning to give the Golden Eagles the early 1-0 lead.
Shortstop
Rylie Rohr then jumped on a pitch in the fifth to double the lead to 2-0. Later that inning,
Megan Johnson placed a double in shallow left field before scoring on a double steal with
Megan Massa.
PacWest Pitcher of the Week
Katlin Entrup tossed six shutout innings and only allowed three hits. She struck out nine batters to bring her total to 38 for the year. As of Monday, she ranks in the top two among all PacWest starting pitchers in multiple categories with a 0.38 ERA (first), five wins (tied for first), and strikeouts (second).
CUI plated five runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull away for good.
Bailey Pfeiler supplied a two-run single to end things as Concordia won on the mercy rule 8-0 in six innings.
Game 2: CUI 1, SFSU 0
Centerfielder
Kaia Nisby and catcher
Kendall Flatt combined for the game-ending double play to close out the weekend with a second straight shutout victory.
With the potential tying run at third base with one out, Nisby caught a fly ball and then threw a rope home to nail the runner trying to score. Flatt made the catch and applied the tag to the delight of the home dugout.
