HILO, Hawai'i - Concordia University Irvine pitchers
Katlin Entrup and Cortney Koelmas cruised to victory against Hawaii Hilo Saturday while the offense pounded out 15 hits to secure the first two PacWest Conference wins of the year.
The doubleheader featured two home runs and two stellar performances in the circle for Concordia. The Golden Eagles improved to 12-4 overall and have now won four straight.
CUI 4, UHH 3
Shortstop
Rylie Rohr and catcher
Kendall Flatt each hit a solo home run to push CUI's lead to 4-1 in the sixth inning. That ended up being crucial since the Vulcans got two back themselves on a long ball hit in the bottom half of the frame.
Megan Massa added two hits from the leadoff spot and Flatt also had a sacrifice fly to knock in the game's first run.
Missy Nemeth also provided a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Entrup limited UHH to just three hits and three earned runs in five innings of work. She struck out four and also walked four. The Claremont, Calif. native improved to 6-1 on the season.Â
Daniela Alvarez earned the save with two impressive innings. Of the six outs she coerced from the Vulcans, five came via the strikeout.
CUI 5, UHH 0
Koelmans went the distance and allowed only three measly hits in seven scorless innings. She pitched the complete game shutout to improve to 2-0 on the season. The right-hander was very efficient by pounding the strike zone early and often. She struck out three Vulcans and with the lone exception of one batter that was hit by a pitch, she did not walk anyone.
Mary Baccay essentially put this one out of reach in the top of the seventh. Moments after Massa brought home
Megan Johnson on a sac fly, Baccay doubled home two more.Â
Michalah Robison and
Mia Saucedo each touched home to push the final margin to 5-0 for CUI.
The two teams are slated to have another doubleheader Sunday starting at 2 p.m. PT (12 pm local HT).
