HILO, Hawai'i -
Rylie Rohr,
Sydney Sprinkle and
Shelby Pfeiler cranked back-to-back-to-back home runs and Concordia pitchers held Hawai'i Hilo to only two runs during Sunday's sweep out on the islands.
No. 16 Concordia improved to 14-4 on the year and 4-0 in PacWest Conference play by taking all four games this weekend against the Vulcans. The shutout win in game one Sunday gave the Golden Eagles four shutouts in their last six contests.
Game 1: CUI 9, UHH 0 (5 innings)
Left-hander
Rae Flores pitched a complete game shutout and limited the Vulcans to only four hits over five innings. Flores struck out six batters and walked four. She didn't need to go back out for the sixth or seventh frames since her offense gave the team enough run support to call the game early.
In fact, CUI pounced on UHH starting pitcher Alexis Lacy immediately for four runs in the top of the first.Â
Missy Nemeth smacked a RBI double to open the scoring before Rohr smacked a full-count pitch over the wall for a two-run blast. Pfeiler followed with a RBI double to score
Jocelyn Pino.
Shelby Pfeiler bashed a solo homer in the third to continue the offensive onslaught.Â
Megan Massa and
Mary Baccay each knocked in another run to push the CUI advantage to 9-0 through three innings.
Flores and the defense did the rest after that to earn the win due to the eight-run mercy rule through five innings.
Game 2: CUI 4, UHH 2
The second game was knotted at 1-1 heading into the sixth inning. And that's when Concordia snatched control of the game with three strong swings of the bat.
Rohr sent a screamer over the wall to put CUI ahead 2-1. Moments later, Sprinkle belted a home run to make it 3-1. Then Pfeiler put an exclamation point on the sequence with a solo shot of her own to make it three consecutive batters leaving the yard for Concordia.
Daniela Alvarez (2-1) was solid out of the bullpen for the second straight day and earned the win in relief.
Callie Nunes navigated CUI through the first four innings before Alvarez finished the deal in the final three frames.
Rohr finished the four-game series 5-for-13 at the plate with three homers, 4 RBI and three runs scored. The Yucca Valley, Calif. native leads CUI with five homers already this season. It's also important to note she had zero errors all weekend at shortstop to help the CUI defense.
Pfeiler rounded out the day with five RBI, two homers and a double.
There are new times and locations for Concordia's next two doubleheaders this Tuesday and Wednesday. The Golden Eagles are now slated to play against Chaminade Tuesday at 10 a.m. local HT (12 pm PT) and that will now be at Pearl City High School.
The Wednesday games will be played instead now at San Island Park.
