IRVINE, Calif. – Point guard
Kobe Sanders poured in 19 points and handed out six assists to lead Concordia's offense against first place Point Loma Nazarene University on Saturday afternoon.
It was the second-highest point total for the Colorado native this season and came just two games after he dropped a career-high 33 points
in an epic overtime win over Holy Names.
Point Loma entered the weekend undefeated in conference play. After
Bryce Fitzgerald and
Freddie Dybala hit back-to-back triples early in the second half, CUI jumped in front
Freshman
Jackson Tucker made a couple buckets before Sanders converted a layup and a three-pointer to put CUI up 58-55.
The Sea Lions were on the ropes before coming alive down the stretch. PLNU built a double-digit lead and then pulled away for a 97-80 victory.
"That's four games in a row we have competed well for the full 40 (minutes)," said CUI head coach
Ken Ammann. "We led well into the second half and scored plenty enough points to win. Just too undersized to get rebounds that would have completed the defensive stop. Gotta find a way to get that done. But we are playing with more confidence and aggressiveness each game so need that to continue."
CUI returns home for the next two weeks for a four-game homestand to close out the regular season campaign. The Golden Eagles host Biola on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m. following the women's contest which begins at 5 p.m.
