IRVINE, CA. - On Thursday evening, the Concordia University Irvine women's basketball team looked to put an end to their four game losing streak and get back to their winning ways. The Golden Eagles entered the final week of the season in a highly contested battle for the number two seed in the upcoming conference tournament. If CUI wanted to secure a first-round bye, they needed to start their final homestand with a victory against Hawai'i Pacific.
In the first half, Jasmine Rachal would light up the Sharks defense with 10 tough buckets. Not only did she keep CUI's deficit to only six points, she hit a new milestone in her hall-of-fame worthy career. On the guard's first free throw, she became the fifth Golden Eagle in school history to hit the 1,600 career point benchmark.
Concordia was able to take that momentum into the second quarter, as they outscored the Sharks 29-13. Katie Timmeran made HPU pay from long range as she converted on all of her three-point attempts while Teagan Thurman led CUI in rebounds in her return to action.
Entering the second half up by 10, Concordia halted any late comeback attempts as they dropped 37 points compared to Hawai'i Pacific's 29. Rachal would finish the contest with 21 points which was her third game in a row where she scored over 20. Meanwhile Thurman and Katie Timmerman combined for 29 points while converting on over 50 percent of their shots.Â
The Golden Eagles would run away with a 78-60 over the Sharks, as they moved to 14-5 in the PacWest play.Â
Concordia will be back in action for a big Senior Night rematch against Azusa Pacific.
