IRVINE, CA. - On Saturday afternoon the Concordia women's basketball squad faced off against Azusa Pacific as the Golden Eagles looked to secure a first-round bye in the PacWest tournament next week
In the first quarter the senior duo of Katie Timmeran and Jasmine Rachal led the CUI offense as they took a one point lead into the second quarter. Unfortunately for Concordia the next ten minutes of action saw their shots not being able to fall and APU regaining the lead as they outscored the home team 19-6.
Trailing by twelve points after halftime the Golden Eagles needed to rally quickly if they wanted to prevent Dominican from taking the #2 seed in Oahu. Unfortunately a low scoring third quarter and an APU connecting from long-range down the stretch prevented any comeback. With the 61-44 loss Concordia moved down to the #3 seed in the tournament.
In their final home game at CUI, Rachal and Timmerman would lead the team in points with 13 and 9 respectively. Meanwhile Erika Maggard would lead Concordia in two categories as she collected 7 rebounds and 3 steals.
After the game, Concordia Athletics honored the careers of Samantha Fries, Destiny Sambrano, Lauren Richter, Timmerman, and Rachal. The road is far from over for these seniors as they gear up for a quarterfinal matchup against the winner of Saturday night's Hawai'i Pacific vs. Biola game.
