HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The third time was the charm for the Concordia Golden Eagles on Thursday as they advanced to the semifinals at the PacWest Conference Championships with a 55-48 win over Hawai'i Pacific.
Luckily for the Golden Eagles, they came out on the winning side just like the first two times these teams faced each other.
First Team All-Conference pick Jasmine Rachal scored 20 points and
Third Team honoree Teagan Thurman added 12 points to help Concordia earn the quarterfinal victory.
Rachal knocked down a clutch jumper right before halftime to give CUI a 20-19 lead at the break. The Brea Olinda High School alum also converted a layup with about five seconds to go in the third quarter to end that period on a high note and put CUI up 37-33 heading into the fourth.
Senior
Katie Timmerman also hit a big-time three-pointer after HPU had briefly regained the lead midway through the fourth. Her trey made it 43-41 CUI at that point.
A few minutes later, Rachal made two free throws and a triple followed by a jumper by Timmerman down the stretch to put CUI in front to stay.
The starters nailed enough free throws the last few minutes to cement the victory.
Next up is a rematch with Dominican - another team the CUI swept during the regular season. The Penguins earned the first round bye by finishing one game ahead of CUI in the standings.
CUI will play at the same exact time on Friday against Dominican in the first women's game of the day. That will be a 2:30 p.m. PT tipoff (12:30 pm local Hawaiian Time).
