IRVINE, Calif. - The Golden Eagles completed their four-game series against Holy Names University Saturday with a doubleheader. CUI won the first game of the day 4-0, but dropped the last game of the series as they were going for the sweep of the Hawks.
CUI 4, HNU 0
Riley O'Sullivan got the nod for the Golden Eagles in the first game and didn't disappoint. The San Diego native pitched a complete game shutout improving his record to 4-1 with an astonishing 0.78 ERA. He only allowed three hits in the game while collecting four punch-outs.
The offense backed up O'Sullivan with four runs just like they did in the first two games of the series Friday night. Junior
Michael Dixon gave his pitcher an early cushion to work with when he went yard in the bottom of the first. That was Dixon's fifth long-ball of the season.
In the bottom of the second, fellow junior
Jake Schulz stepped into the box with a runner on. The Arizona native crushed one over the fence for his first homerun of the season extending the Golden Eagles lead to 3-0.
With the way O'Sullivan was pitching three runs were plenty enough for him to work with. However, Dixon would later single in another run giving CUI a four-run lead.
O'Sullivan got help from both his offense and defense throughout his complete game shutout. In the bottom of the ninth graduate student
Nick Hansen made a highlight reel catch at first base to record an out.
On Monday, O'Sullivan was named PacWest Pitcher of the Week for his outstanding contributions.
CUI 1, HNU 5
Graduate Student
Mason Metcalfe got the start in the last game of the series and struck out three batters in his four innings of work. Fellow graduate student
Ryan O'Toole pitched two solid innings in relief.
In the last inning CUI tried to spark a come-back when Schulz ripped a double to right center scoring junior
Derek Delgado.
The Green and Gold are back on the diamond next Friday March 31 as they welcome in Academy of Art for a four-game series.
