Golden Eagles baseball opened up their four-game series versus Academy of Art with a double-header Friday. The series will conclude tomorrow afternoon with a double-header starting at 12 p.m.
CUI 2, Art U 5
In the first game, freshman pitcher
Josh Pugh got the start for the Green and Gold. The Placentia native went a solid 5.2 innings striking out eight batters while only giving up one run.
Fellow freshman
Landry Spitler was penciled in as the leadoff hitter and didn't disappoint. Spitler collected three hits in the game setting up the rest of the lineup. CUI outhit Art U 11 hits to 9 but was unable to capitalize on those opportunities.
Redshirt junior
Nathan Benefeito tallied his seventh RBI of the season when he singled up the middle scoring graduate student
Nick Hansen. In the bottom of the eighth inning freshman
Jordan Bolden cut the deficit to 5-2 when he drove in Hansen with a sac fly.
Freshman
Owen Gott received the start behind the dish and tallied two hits. The Golden Eagles had four players who each had two hits in the game.
CUI 6, Art U 1
The story of the night cap was redshirt junior
Brett Finnel who tossed a complete game for the Green and Gold. The Riverside native fanned eight batters while only allowing five hits in a total of seven innings pitched. Finnel's record now moves to 4-1 on the year.
Senior
Hayden Winters tallied the first runs of the ballgame when he singled in junior
Derek Delgado. The fourth inning was when the Golden Eagles offense erupted. Spitler started it off with a sac fly scoring junior
Jake Schulz. Then just like he did in game one, Bolden came through with an RBI but this time two, when he singled to left field. Also in the fourth, Hansen singled to right field scoring junior
Michael Dixon.
These runs seemed to be plenty as Finnel kept moving along. He would end up striking out the side in the last inning to finish off the game.
