PHOENIX, Ariz. – The CUI men's volleyball were looking for another win against No. 5 Grand Canyon tonight after a huge upset against the Lopes Friday. GCU closed out the match in just three sets with scores 35-37, 22-25, and 16-25.
 

Uriel Batista and Gage Doble finished the match with nine kills a-piece and each served up an ace. They tallied a combined seven digs from the back row. Johnny Anselmo had seven kills while hitting .375 against the Lopes and led the Golden Eagles with five digs. Freshman Connor Dell came into the game and made an impact with three kills and two digs.
 

Sophomore Maxwell McCullough was unstoppable in the middle as he went four-for-five and no errors hitting an impressive .800. Gil Herold contributed with four kills while both middles had a solo block that came at clutch points in the first set for CUI.

 
Jacob Reilly was in the libero jersey tonight leading the back row with three digs while Makai Lipson ran the offense and had 32 assists.

 
The first set was a battle as McCullough put up a solo block to tie the score at 24 each and bring the Golden Eagles within reach. The score continued to toggle and another solo block from Herold gave the Golden Eagles a 32-31 edge but that didn't stop the Lopes from fighting back. Doble went to the service line and served up an ace but GCU fired back two aces to finish the first set 35-37. The next two sets went in favor of Grand Canyon to seal the win and tie the series at one each.
 

CUI will continue road play against No. 10 Stanford in back-to-back nights starting Friday Mar. 31 with both times slated for a 7 p.m. start. The Golden Eagles will be in the CU Arena on Thursday Apr. 6 against No. 7 ranked Pepperdine at 7 p.m.
