IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine men's volleyball team hosted No. 3 Penn State for the second time in program history. The Golden Eagles put up a fight against the Nittany Lions but Penn State secured the win in three with scores 19-25, 38-40, and 20-25.
The second set was one for the books as the Golden Eagles were down by four points and slowly crept back in the game with help from the Nittany Lions errors. A kill from
Mason Mullins out of the middle tied the score at 24 each. Service errors from Penn State and kills from Mullins and
Uriel Batista kept the game alive inching their way to continue play. PSU finished the set winning by a whopping 40-38 score.
Penn State continued their momentum in the start of the third taking a 10-5 lead over CUI. Freshman
Scott Montez went on a service run to deplete the lead by only two. The Nittany Lions was able to close out the set by five points.
Kobe Kiley started on the outside for the Golden Eagles and finished with five kills and three digs. Jonny Anselmo and
Scott Montez combined for five kills while Anselmo scooped up eight digs from the back and a solo block. Batista had a team-high of seven kills and 10 digs.
Mullins was clutch in the middle for the Green and Gold as he had five kills and put up a solo block from the middle.
Cole Vigo made his mark at the net with three block assists.
Liam Roberts is strategically placed on the right side of the court to add a blocking presence.
Makai Lipson finished the match with 19 assists and putting up a solo block for the first time in his collegiate career and libero
Jacob Reilly adds four digs from the back.
The Golden Eagles have a new addition to the schedule as they take on Daemen on Wednesday Mar. 15 at 7 p.m. in the CU Arena.
