AZUSA, Calif. – After splitting the PacWest series against APU this past weekend the CUI baseball team made up a non-conference game Tuesday and came up short by a close 12-8 score.
The Cougars struck first and scored in the first six innings to take an 11-0 lead over the Golden Eagles but that didn't stop CUI as they were able to score eight runs in the last three innings.
Cole Quillin put the first score on the board with a wild pitch from the Cougars along with a throwing error from their first baseman to score
Jeremiah De La Trinidad and
Nick Hansen in the seventh. Hansen hit a three-run RBI homer to left field to bring the Golden Eagles to a score of six.
In the bottom of the eighth APU hit a solo homer to take a 12-6 lead but
Jake Schulz answered back with a solo home run to left center.
Derek Delgado was able to come around the bases on a fielder's choice hit by
Makamae Du Pont before the Cougars finished the game.
Five different Golden Eagles went on the bump with
Jamison King starting for CUI and pitched 1.2 here
Matthew Williams came in to relieve the starter and pitched for 1.1 innings.
Mason Metcalfe,
Tristan Perrin, and
Dominic Nunes came into the game to assist on the mound and Nunes struck out three.
The Golden Eagles will play start their series against Point Loma in a two day stanza with back-to-back doubleheaders. CUI will host the Sea Lions Friday Apr. 14 with start times at 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. The Green and Gold will head down to San Diego, Calif. to finish the series Saturday Apr. 15 with start times around 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.
