CUI Tennis Teams Top Biola On Back-To-Back Days

Men Earn Wednesday Upset After Women Win On Tuesday

IRVINE, Calif. - It was ladies first as the Concordia women's tennis squad took care of business against rival Biola on Tuesday before the men's squad followed suit on Wednesday with another clutch win over the Red and Black.

CUI Women 5, Biola 2

After dropping the doubles point to the visiting Eagles, CUI made its move in singles play.  Sophie Rachor won at the No. 2 position in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 and Jessica Bear ultimately won in three sets to give CUI a 3-2 advantage.

Alyssa Zayat at No. 5 singles and Alicia Da Re at the No. 6 spot proved to be too much for Biola and handed the Golden Eagles their 13th victory of the season.

Earlier this season, the CUI women tied the school record with nine consecutive tennis victories.

Their only two losses have come against Azusa Pacific.  CUI currently ranks third in the PacWest rankings and appears destined for a first-round bye as a Top 4 seed in the upcoming PacWest Conference Championships that feature 12 teams in the tournament out in Surprise, Arizona.

CUI Men 4, Biola 3

The Golden Eagles also lost the doubles point on Wednesday and then rebounded in singles action.  Julius Seifert was victorious at the No. 2 singles spot 6-4, 6-2 to start the comeback.

Fellow freshman Alex Edmonston won the first and third sets at No. 3 position to hang on for a crucial point.  His teammate Adam Large meanwhile made mincemeat of his opponent at the No. 6 singles slot and won easily 6-2, 6-2.

With a 3-3 score between the two teams, it all came down to the No. 5 singles match between Concordia's James Caddies and Biola's Isaac Cordova.  Cordova took the first set 7-5 but Caddies rallied and you could feel the tension as he pushed it to a third set with a 7-5 win of his own in set two.

In what wound up being one of the longer matches of the season, Caddies outlasted his opponent and staked his claim to a 6-3 victory to take it in three sets and propel CUI to a 4-3 victory.

Next up, both CUI tennis squads host Fresno Pacific on Thursday, April 13 with the men holding Senior Day at 10 a.m. and the women beginning at 2 p.m. on campus.

The CUI women will hold their Senior Day on Saturday, April 15 on campus as well against Westmont.
