IRVINE, Calif. – The CUI baseball team started their last regular season series against Fresno Pacific on Friday needing at least one win to stay alive for a chance to make the conference tournament.
Before the start of the doubleheader,
Concordia honored longtime PacWest Conference Commissioner Bob Hogue who threw out the ceremonial first pitch to Concordia President Dr. Michael Thomas. Hogue has been the commissioner for the league for 16 years and will be retiring at the end of this school year.
CUI 1, FPU 5
Senior
Derek Delgado and freshman
Gavin Grutzmacher went two-for-three at the plate. Grutzmacher singled to left field to bring home the solo run for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Josh Pugh started on the mound and went 3.1 innings allowing eight hits with four runs and striking out two.
Jamison King was effective as he came into the game for the remaining 5.2 innings giving up four hits and one run with 12 of his outs coming by way of the fly out.
CUI 5, FPU 2
Brett Finnel started the second game and threw a complete game striking out eight and allowing eight hits. The Riverside, Calif. native picked up his fifth win of the season.
Nick Hansen started things off for CUI going two-for-three hitting his ninth home run of the season. Hansen later hit a two-run single to left center to take a 3-1 lead over the Sunbirds. FPU scored one in the fourth but CUI answered back with a sacrifice fly from
Chris Butterfield and then
Michael Dixon brought in another run on a bases loaded walk to extend the score 5-2 over Fresno Pacific.
The Golden Eagles will finish the series with a doubleheader against Fresno Pacific on Saturday, Apr. 29 with start times at 12 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. This is the last home game of the season and CUI will be honoring their seniors around 11:35 a.m.
