IRVINE, Calif. - On Thursday night, basketball was back in action with CUI competing against the Chaminade University Hawaii Silverswords. This game was no different from the last, with physical play, great defense, and overall great competition from both teams.
As the first quarter was underway, both teams were neck and neck, shooting back and forth with no team quite in control of the game. After one-quarter of play, CUI held a slight advantage over the Silverswords, 15-12.
Opening up the second quarter, CUI held onto that slight lead throughout the entirety of the quarter. Players such as
Savannah Felix-Amoroso and
Teagan Thurman really flexed their muscles on the boards and created plenty of second-shot opportunities for CUI to lead at the half 31-25.
Coming out of the half, the Golden Eagles had to weather a storm from the Silverswords, who went on a 13-2 run to open up the third quarter. Combating that storm, bench players
Miranda Lomax and
Hannah Vela created a great spark of energy that CUI needed. After three quarters of play, CUI was still on top 44-41.
In the fourth quarter,
Stephanie Lee opened up with back-to-back threes, and CUI never looked back. The Golden Eagles were dominant in the rebounding game, leading over the Silverswords 46-33, and ultimately took the win with a final score of 69-58.
Key contributing players for the Golden Eagles include
Teagan Thurman, who came off the bench in tonight's action and posted her third double-double of the season with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and two block shots.
Stephanie Lee led all scorers with 18 points and three rebounds.
Camryn Kiernan had 10 points going 2/4 from deep.
Savannah Felix-Amoroso had a near double-double, posting eight points, grabbing nine rebounds, three assists, and one blocked shot.
