IRVINE, Calif. – It took just two minutes for the Concordia men's soccer team to assert itself and take the lead at Dominican on Thursday.
By the time all 90 minutes were in the books and their Halloween matinee was completed, the Golden Eagles had soared to a 2-1 victory.
Miguel Arroyo spooked the Penguins by scoring in the second minute of play. He dribbled right down broadway and uncorked a shot to the right side of the goal as multiple defenders started to converge on him in the box.
Ryan Smith had flipped the field after he and
Tyler Oakson together wrangled away possession on their half of the pitch, and then Smith found Arroyo across the field. Arroyo took it from there and created his own opportunity.
It was a great way to set the tone for the visiting Golden Eagles.
Arroyo was at it again in the 39th minute.
Domenyk Jara found him down the left sideline and they both joined the attack as
Dylan Graham and players on both sides raced towards the Dominican net. Arroyo dazzled with some fancy footwork, broke a defender's ankles and then fed the ball across to Graham who deposited it in the back of the net.
That second goal turned out to be critical as the Penguins avoided the shutout with a late goal in the 81st minute.
Arroyo now leads CUI in three major categories with four goals, six assists and 14 points.
For Graham, this was his third goal of the season as he continues to make an impact as a redshirt freshman. He is already second on the squad in goals after Arroyo.
Former PacWest Defender of the Week
Andre Flores collected a season-high eight saves, including a key stop in the opening minutes that preceded Arroyo's electric goal.
Next up for Concordia is the second leg of their Northern California road trip. The Golden Eagles visit the Jessup Warriors for the first time as a PacWest foe in Rocklin on Saturday. The match is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m. before the women's game at 1:30 p.m.
Senior Day will be next Saturday, Nov. 9 at 4 p.m. against Hawai'i Pacific.
