CLAREMONT, Calif. - After the first home win of the season, the Concordia men's water polo team claimed two more victories on day one of the Gary Troyer Tournament. The Golden Eagles improved their overall record to 6-12.
The Golden Eagles captured their first win of the day against the Wagner State Seahawks. Concordia was able to solidify its lead early on and win all four sprints. By the second period, eight goals had been scored. Multiple players stepped up to the plate and contributed to the offense, such as Lucas Rodriguez, Stan De Mey, Kai Young, and Oscar Garcia Blomback.
Harry Bentham was the key offensive player for Concordia with four goals and two assists. Kaliq Khan and Konstantinos Koulouris came in clutch with four assists and a handful of steals for the Golden Eagles.
Although the Seahawks made attempts at closing the gap, Carlos Olat, Jacob Stuart, and Sam Diamond netted two goals each to help Concordia claim the victory 15-10.
The second game of the day was against the McKendree Bearcats. Concordia blazed past McKendree with a whopping 22 goals to their 10.
An impressive performance was made by Konstantinos Koulouris who tallied six goals for Concordia. He broke past his standing season-high of 4 goals. The graduate student has made quite an impression this season with 32 goals, 30 assists, and 17 steals overall.
Not to mention that junior Charlie Johnson hit a season-high three goals, effectively getting a hat trick.
The Green and the Gold kept McKendree down to two goals in three periods, and four in the final. By games end, Concordia outscored McKendree 22-10 and claimed its third victory of the week.
Defensively, Griffin Beth had 11 total saves over the course of both games. Freshman Hale Durbiano stepped in against McKendree and captured a save and a steal in the fourth period.
Next up: Concordia takes on Cal State Fullerton and Pepperdine on Saturday, Oct. 4. The action starts at 10:40 am.
