CLAREMONT, Calif. - Keeping the momentum going from day one, the Concordia men's water polo team closed out the Gary Troyer tournament with back-to-back close matches. The Golden Eagles wrapped up the week with three wins under their belt.
Cal State Fullerton was the first opponent of the day for Concordia. The Titans secured their lead within the second period with seven goals. The Titans maintained a lead for most of the match, although goal attempts were made by Harry Bentham, Sam Diamond, and Konstantinos Koulouris.
Sam Diamond remained steadfast in Concordia's offense with a season-high six goals. The junior utility also tallied two steals and an assist. Key performances by Harry Bentham and Kai Young also helped close the gap between the two teams, specifically in the fourth period. Concordia outscored the Titans 5-3 in the fourth, but the comeback barely missed the mark.
Concordia lost to Cal State Fullerton by a two-point deficit, 14-16.
In yet another close match, the Golden Eagles clawed tooth and nail against the Division I powerhouse Pepperdine. Concordia started strong and outscored the Waves in the first period. Charlie Johnson and Kai Young were the first to score goals for CUI.
The Golden Eagles offense had eight players score against Pepperdine. Harry Bentham led the charge with five goals, Stan De Mey with four, and Jacob Stuart with three.
Konstantinos Koulouris kept the ball moving and tallied six assists in the match. His efforts along with Carlos Olat's contributions gave Concordia a chance to close the gap. By halftime, the score was CUI 11, PEP 12. The Golden Eagles outscored the Waves in the third, capturing four goals to their three. It was nearly neck and neck.
Down 17-20 with thirty seconds remaining, Harry Bentham found the cage not once, but twice to make the final score 19-20. Bentham had 18 goals over the course of the week's five matches.
The Golden Eagles are on the hunt for their next win. The Lancer Joust is right around the corner, starting on Friday, October 11. The first opponent for CUI will be Toronto at 1:30 pm.
