Box Score 2 RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Concordia men's water polo team headed down to Cal Baptist University for the Lancer Joust. The two-day tournament started off with a well-deserved victory for the Golden Eagles.
Concordia had a strong lead early on in the game and outscored the Toronto Varsity Blues 5 to 1 in the first period. Carlos Olat captured the first goal of the game to get the ball rolling. Not too long after, Harry Bentham tallied two back-to-back goals, one on a penalty and the other was assisted by Sam Diamond to bump the score CUI 3 – TOR 0.
Lucas Rodriguez stepped up to the plate in the game and had his first hat trick as a Golden Eagle. The freshman utility scored two in the second period and had a crucial assist for the team.
Konstantinos Koulouris offensively led the team with three goals of his own in the match against Toronto. He was recently named the WWPA Offensive Player of the Week after his astonishing performance at the Gary Troyer Tournament. The graduate student was able to hit a career-high six assists and six goals in the same weekend.
Defensively, Griffin Beth and Hale Durbiano held off the Varsity Blue's offense, allowing only nine goals. Beth had nine saves overall and Durbiano had three saves within the fourth period.
Strong performances from Sam Diamond, Thomas Kelly, and Kai Young kept Concordia consistently ahead of its opponent until the Golden Eagles won 14-9.
The No. 17 Santa Clara proved its mettle in the evening match against CUI. The Golden Eagles were close behind the Broncos for most of the match. Kaliq Khan was the first to add a point to the board. Despite the small point gap, Oscar Garcia Blomback took charge and led the Golden Eagles with three goals. Harry Bentham, Konstantinos Koulouris, and Carlos Olat followed in his stead and tallied two goals each.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, senior Jacob Stuart scored two goals for Concordia and officially tied the school record for goals scored in a single career. He stands to surpass Jeff Runyan who sits at 145 goals. Breaking records isn't new for the Yucaipa native. Earlier in the season, Stuart broke the school record for most recorded assists with his 57th in the match against Cal Lutheran.
Although Concordia's efforts were valiant, Santa Clara kept it's lead until game's end. The Golden Eagles lost by two points to the Broncos, 13-15.
Next up in the Lancer Joust is the exhibition game against Saddleback at 1:30 pm and the game against tournament host, Cal Baptist University at 5:30 pm.
