IRVINE, Calif. - Opening up the home opener, the Golden Eagles took on the visiting Humbolt University Lumberjacks.

As tip-off commenced, the Golden Eagles faced a frenzy of offensive boards and threes from the Lumberjacks. CUI finally settled in with two Izzy Navarro threes to get the Golden Eagles within three points midway through the first quarter. The Lumberjacks and the Golden Eagles traded threes to end the first, with Humbolt up five 23-18.

Trying to make up that five-point lead, the Golden Eagles cut it down to one, but the Lumberjacks had different plans. Camryn Keirnan got hot from three, hitting her two threes in the second quarter. The Golden Eagles were still down at the half, 36-40.

Just as the first half was a battle, the second half was no different. Both teams scrambled to loose balls, diving on the floor and showing some good old-fashioned hustle. Using the energy from the crowd and the Golden Eagles bench, CUI eventually took their first lead in the third quarter with 2:30 left to play. Heading into the half, both teams were all tied up at 56 a piece.

As the fourth quarter was underway, both teams sought to gain the upper hand. Despite getting open looks at the basket and a few stops on defense, the ball would not go into the basket for CUI in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter, which led the game into overtime.

Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, the Lumberjacks started overtime on a 6-0 run. The Golden Eagles tried to answer back with late Erika Maggard three but fell short, losing to the Lumberjacks with a final score of 75-81.
