AZUSA, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine women's volleyball put on an impressive show against Azusa Pacific Saturday. The teams went the distance going five sets that ultimately favored Concordia with scores 23-25, 25-23, 26-28, 25-23, and 15-10.
The sets toggled between each team but the CUI needed to win the fourth keep the match going. The Cougars were up by five late in the set but tough serving pushed the Golden Eagles to fend off their opponents.
Kawehi Chang went on a three point serving run and hitting errors from APU tightened their lead by two. Just when the Cougars thought things were going their way with a 23-20 lead to close out the match libero
Delaney Risse brought her tough serving when it mattered most and all three front players helped with a kill to seal a comeback win in the fourth.
The Green and Gold continued that momentum into the fifth set and broke away later in the set again with Chang at the back line and
Celia Dowell serving up an ace and kill from
Ally Scheidle to take the match and biggest point separation at the end of a set.
Caitlin Jarrell was unstoppable at the net and put up an impressive 20 kills while hitting .548. 20 kills marks a career-high topping her previous 13 earlier in the season.
Delaney Gregg was big defensively as she had a team high of eight blocks including one solo.
Kennedy Farley finished and Scheidle had 10 kills.
Kayden Croy reached another double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs with four blocks.
Chang put up 55 assists to set up her offense and had another 15 digs from the back. Dowell had 19 digs and Risse reached in the twenties for the fifth time this season with 26. Freshman
Jadyn Orava came into the back row and dug up 10.
The Golden Eagles move to 14-9 overall and 9-6 in PacWest play with five conference games remaining. CUI will be in Costa Mesa, Calif. as they take on newly added Vanguard Thursday Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. before their two game stanza at home against Hawai'i Pacific and Chaminade.
