COSTA MESA, Calif. – Playing on a breezy day roughly 15 minutes from campus, Concordia University Irvine men's soccer snapped Vanguard's seven-game unbeaten streak handily with a sound 3-1 victory.
True freshman
Marcus Ozmai tallied his first career assist by weaving his way towards the center of the pitch and finding
Tyler Oakson in the 45th minute. Moments after hearing the "One Minute" first half warning by the PA announcer, Oakson uncorked a screamer to the top left part of the net. It was Oakson's second goal of the season.
"God was good to us today," said Oakson afterwards. "I've taken that shot 50 times and I miss it 49 times."
In the second half, another freshman for the Golden Eagles was in on a key play that led to the team's second goal. Servite High School alum
Justin Cuevas drew a yellow card on the defense and a penalty shot in the 56th minute. Rafael Espinoza calmly went to the spot and converted the PK to put the Golden Eagles in front 2-0.
Vanguard immediately started to push forward with a renewed spirit, and quickly created multiple scoring chances. Concordia goalkeeper
Andre Flores made a fantastic point blank save to preserve the clean sheet during that sequence. Flores collected four saves.
A few minutes and a few dribbles later, fellow Servite alum and SAAC rep
Kevin Sanchez fed senior
Nikoa Markham for an insurance goal that capped the scoring at 3-0 in favor of the visiting Golden Eagles.
Vanguard did cash in for one goal late in the match after earning a penalty and converting for its lone score.
