IRVINE, Calif. - The Concordia men's water polo team defeated Biola to lock in the No. 1 seed in the West for the upcoming WWPA Conference Tournament. The Golden Eagles now stand 3-0 in conference play.
In the late-night Eagles showdown, Concordia and Biola went head-to-head for the second time this season. In the last matchup, Concordia blew ahead of Biola 16-7 and captured their first conference win. The Biola Eagles were better prepared for Friday night's rematch.
Neither team allowed a single goal in the first period, keeping the crowd on its toes. Many shot attempts were made by both teams, yet impressive saves from the defense kept the score 0-0.
It wasn't until the second period that the first goal occurred. Concordia's own Kai Young blazed past the defense at the start and added a point to Concordia's board. The Golden Eagles jumped onto the opportunity, scoring two more goals in the next two minutes.
Stan De Mey and Carlos Olat were responsible for these next goals. Strong performances from Harry Bentham, Kaliq Khan, and Konstantinos Koulouris sealed the victory for Concordia, boasting a 7-5 lead over Biola.
When it comes to Concordia's scoring, Harry Bentham and Jacob Stuart are in a race to capture the school record for most career goals. Stuart was the first to break ahead of Jeff Runyan's 145 goal record this season, and now stands at 153 goals in a career. Harry Bentham nips at his heels with 152 goals. They have been key contributors to Concordia's offense and contributed to the win.
The victory marked a season-low five goals allowed. It wouldn't have been possible without senior goalie Griffin Beth's efforts. The Costa Mesa native had nine saves in the match and stopped Biola in its tracks. Defensively, Lucas Rodriguez and Konstantinos Koulouris tallied three steals each, and Koulouris managed to make three crucial field blocks in Concordia's favor.
Next up for the Golden Eagles is the home match against UC Merced on November 15 and Fresno Pacific on November 16. The Golden Eagles secured the No. 1 seed in the West for the WWPA Conference Tournament and are on the hunt for their next win!
