HILO, Hawai'i –
Freddie Dybala scored a career-high 18 points and freshman
Charlie Dalton added 15 points on Saturday evening, but a second half comeback fell short on the road against Hawai'i Hilo.
CUI outscored the Vulcans 38-35 in the second half. However, a strong defensive effort by Hawai'i Hilo hampered the offense of the Golden Eagles in the first 20 minutes of play. CUI was held to only 18 points before intermission but kept attacking the rim and competed until the final whistle.
It was just one of those nights where shots weren't falling for the Green and Gold.
"We are playing well and competing out there every night but followed up a 17 point first half the other night with 18 (tonight)," said CUI head coach
Ken Ammann. "We are getting good looks so need to knock some shots down next week. Good effort cutting it to six in second half but too many bad turnovers cost us."
Tim Adetukasi and
Kobe Sanders combined for 15 points. Dalton and Dybala each corralled five rebounds as well.
Dybala led CUI with his best scoring output in two years. His previous career-high was 14 points last season.
Brody Collins added four points off the bench and
Vincent Albertini collected a career-high three rebounds.
Concordia fell to the seventh spot in the PacWest standings after concluding its three-game road trip against the Hawai'i. The next few weeks will feature seven teams primarily jostling for the six seeds that will reserve spots in the upcoming PacWest Conference tournament this March.
