LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine men's volleyball team went on the road to complete the series against No. 12 USC on Friday night. The Golden Eagles put up a fight against the Trojans but they took the series and match with scores 25-21, 25-12, 22-25, and 15-10.
Yotam Briger had a career-high of 51 assists while
Jacob Reilly and
Johnny Anselmo both played a pivotal role in defense as the liberos.
Freshmen played a key role in the offense for the Golden Eagles as
Christian Galoppo led the Green and Gold with 17 kills and
Ties Cornelissen was right behind with 16 while having a combined 17 digs.
Gage Doble was on the outside with Cornelissen and had 15 kills with a service ace and five digs.
Middles were unstoppable at the net with
Maxwell McCullough going four-for-eight with no errors and
Clement Osahon Jr. having five kills with three blocks throughout the match.
The Trojans were up two sets and the Golden Eagles came out in the third with a 4-0 lead over USC and never looked back. Osahon Jr. made an immediate impact with two kills to keep CUI within a point from USC. The Golden Eagles took at 23-21 lead over the Trojans after a hitting error from USC and forced a timeout. A kill from Doble finished the fourth set and forced a fifth deciding set.
The fifth set started out toggling back and forth until the Trojans broke away after the side switch and did not allow the Golden Eagles back into the game closing out the match.
The Golden Eagles will compete against No. 7 UC Irvine back-to-back nights starting on Friday Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. before heading back in the CU Arena on Saturday Feb. 24 at 7 p.m.
