Pugh Sets Career-High 15 Strikeouts Versus CSUDH

IRVINE, Calif. – After being on the road the first two games of the series against Cal State Dominguez Hills the Golden Eagles look to finish the series on their home field. CUI split on the day going 1-1 and tying the series 2-2. 
 
CUI 6 CSUDH 4

Josh Pugh started on the bump for CUI and what a day the sophomore had. Pugh set a career-high of 15 strikeouts in seven innings and had 9 straight strikeouts starting from the top of the second until the fifth.
 
Jamison King came in to relieve Pugh on the mound to pitch one inning and had two strikeouts. Conor Meehan finished the last inning and earned his second straight save to tally three on the season.
 
Tank Espalin got the offense going for CUI with an RBI in the third to take an early 1-0 lead. In the fourth Wyatt Madison started things off with a double to center field followed by a single from Michael Dixon. Catcher Owen Gott reached on a fielder's choice after a perfectly placed bunt to bring home Madison. Shane Wallace and Cameron Slessor helped with the offense each earning and RBI taking a 4-0 lead over the Toros.
 
The Golden Eagles continued momentum in the fifth as another hit from Madison brought Isaiah Walz all the way to third in scoring position. Dixon hit an RBI single to center field to extend their lead 5-0. Wallace crushed his first home run of the season to right center in the bottom of the sixth.
 
CUI 1 CSUDH 3
 
In the third CSUDH struck first with a 2 RBI homer to left field putting two in the frame. CUI got some offense going in the bottom of the sixth starting with a single from Walz and Dixon coming up clutch again for the Golden Eagles with an RBI single to cut the deficit by one. The Toros closed out the game 3-1 and did not allow CUI to score again.
 
Senior Riley O'Sullivan started on the mound and went 6.1 innings allowing four hits and two strikeouts while Richie Kingsborough came in to close out the game.
 
The Golden Eagles are hosting a double header against Colorado School of Mines on Monday Feb. 19 with an 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. start time.
