IRVINE, Calif. –
Shelli Faulk helped the Concordia offense come alive and a trio of pitchers dominated in the circle as the Golden Eagles earned two wins against No. 19 Adelphi on Saturday afternoon.
This marked the fourth straight day that Concordia had played at least one game that went extra innings.
The Golden Eagles improved to 6-3 overall and will head out on the road for their next 10 scheduled contests before returning home in the second week of March.
Game 1: CUI 1, No. 19 Adelphi 0 (8 innings)
Faulk smacked the walk-off solo home run to win game one after the two squads had kept each other off the scoreboard over the first seven innings
Katlin Entrup struck out 11 batters and only allowed two hits and one walk in eight scoreless innings of work.
Faulk also used her height to reel in a number of putouts at first base throughout the day.
The two teams only combined for five hits in the opener.
Mary Baccay led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple but wound up stranded there. Outfielder
Kaia Nisby added one single for CUI in the sixth.
Game 2: CUI 6, No. 19 Adelphi 2
Senior
Cortney Koelmans followed suit in game two, picking up right where Entrup left off. Koelmans struck out eight batters over the course of six innings.
Koelmans allowed only two runs (one earned) and seven hits and improved to 3-1 on the season with the win.
Kendall Flatt opened the scoring with a RBI single in the second that scored freshman
Audrey Robles.
Consecutive doubles by leadoff hitter
Megan Johnson and then Baccay doubled the lead to 2-0 in the third.
Rylie Rohr later plated Baccay on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. Baccay had just advanced from second base to third on a fly out, beating the throw with some heads-up base running and a tidy slide. That helped give Koelmans some extra cushion.
Robles added a two-run double in the fifth. Her hit to the gap came shortly after Faulk had done some more damage with a RBI double that plated pinch-runner
Alexa Couto.
Freshman pitcher
Jayden Nishi tossed the first scoreless inning of her career to finish out the game in the seventh.
CUI hits the road for the beginning of PacWest Conference play next week. The trip north includes a stop in Hayward to play Cal State East Bay on Wednesday. CUI then hikes over to San Rafael for back-to-back doubleheaders beginning next Saturday, Feb. 24 against Dominican before facing Academy of Art.
The Golden Eagles will be back at home again on Friday, March 8 at 3 p.m. against their rivals from Biola.
