IRVINE, Calif. – A hard-fought game for Concordia against Chaminade went down-to-the-wire out in Hawai'i, with a senior guard for both sides hitting a clutch basket in the final 17 seconds of regulation.
Fortunately for the Green and Gold,
Kobe Sanders hit a turn-around jumper to tie the game at 64-64.
Unfortunately for the Green and Gold, Isaac Amaral-Artharee also made a jumper from just inside the three-point line to help secure the win for Chaminade in a rematch from early January.
Sanders scored 20 points and did everything he could to will his team to victory. The senior guard scored Concordia's last 10 points over the course of the final seven minutes of action. It was clear CUI liked his match up and he was able back down his defender into the post on multiple occasions to setup some solid looks in the paint.
Charlie Dalton added 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds. He made four free throws to keep CUI within striking distance before Sanders scored the last 10 points for their team.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early by as many as a dozen points but were able to take the first lead before halftime. Three-pointers by
Kobe Sanders and
Jackson Harding helped bring the offense to life, and then a pair of triple by
Connor Gleason put CUI in front 24-23.
CUI led 29-25 at intermission after a low-scoring first half.
Early in the second half,
Tim Adetukasi ripped away a steal on the defensive end before galloping the distance for a breakaway layup despite getting fouled. He would convert the And-1 free throw to put CUI up 31-29.
CUI limited Chaminade to a paltry 2-for-16 night on three-pointers. It was a great defensive effort on the perimeter for the Golden Eagles, but in the second half, the 'Swords adapted and started attacking the paint more while drawing more fouls to get to the charity stripe. Chaminade shot 56 percent from the floor in the second half to help earn the win.
Both teams shot extremely well from the free throw line with CUI shooting 18-for-22 (82 percent) and Chaminade going 20-for-22 (91 percent). Amaral-Artharee even went 11-for-11 at the line.
The Golden Eagles also got 15 points from its bench, led by guard
Freddie Dybala who had eight points while shooting 5-for-6 from the free throw line.
"Our guys are battling and competing very hard," said CUI head coach
Ken Ammann. "We just couldn't get a stop the last eight minutes. Too many silly fouls. We played so hard, so tough to swallow missing some layups and giving them a couple easy ones to start the second half. Trip doesn't get easier though so we have to keep fighting.
CUI returns to action Thursday at Hawai'i Pacific before visiting Hawaii Hilo on Saturday to close out the three-game road trip out on the islands.
