ORANGE, Calif. - After the match against Biola on Wednesday, the Concordia women's water polo team swept past the competition and claimed not one, but two victories against Iona and Fresno Pacific on the first day of the Convergence Tournament.
The Golden Eagles headed into their third overtime match of the season! Against the Gaels, Abby Mammen led the offense with three spectacular goals. Melinna Galbraith and Lily Ensley were also crucial to the Golden Eagles offense with twin goals of their own.
The match was a nail-biter with no clear lead. By the fourth period, it was tied 9-9. And it could have been anyone's game. Yet, seizing the opportunity, Lily Ensley scored in overtime and Melinna Galbraith captured the game-winning goal in double overtime for Concordia. The final score was CUI 11 – Iona 10.
Defensively, Jaden Soto kept the Gaels at bay with 12 saves with a .545 percentage for the whole game.
The Golden Eagles faced Fresno Pacific a few weeks prior for the CUI home opener and defeated the Sunbirds 8-6. Since both teams were familiar with the other, the game was closer than anticipated. CUI consistently outscored FPU despite their efforts and claimed victory 6-4.
Tess Henke secured the first goal of the match on a power play. Following suit with power play shots, Tamsyn Evezard acquired back-to-back goals for Concordia in the second period. She led the Golden Eagles offensively and had two steals under her belt.
Next up for the Green and the Gold are their matches against Arizona State and Chapman on day two of the Convergence Tournament. The first game starts at 8 a.m. and the next follows at 11:45 a.m.!
The Golden Eagles are on the hunt for their next win.
