SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Concordia women's water polo team wrapped up the weekend in San Diego with an overall record of 1-2. The Golden Eagles split on the final day of the Aztec Invitational, winning the first match against No. 22 CSUN and battling through the last against No. 13 UC San Diego.
In the morning, Tamsyn Evezard scored the first goal of the day on a penalty shot. The CSUN Matadors couldn't slow down Evezard and Abby Mammen in the following minutes. Two more penalty goals were added to Concordia's board.
Entering the second period, Tessa Tavaglione sped through the water and won the sprint for Concordia. Tess Henke answered the call and sent an impressive shot into the back of the cage to get the period moving. CSUN may have scored on a power play, but CUI graduate student Melinna Galbraith made it 5-4 with her own shot into the cage.
Samantha Rainey saved a few of the Matador's shots before Abby Mammen, consistent scorer for the Golden Eagles, swept in and scored her third goal of the match. Despite the lead going into the third period, the Matadors added five goals to their board to put them in the lead 10-9. Crucial goals from Andie Perreira, Melinna Galbraith, and Abby Mammen secured the win for the Golden Eagles.
The final score was CUI 13 – CSUN 11.
