IRVINE, CALIF. - It's officially two days until senior night for the Concordia women's water polo team. Before the momentous occasion, the Golden Eagles played in a midweek match against nearby rival, University of Irvine. The No. 7 UCI Anteaters came prepared for the Irvine showdown, which resulted in a 18-8 win.
The CUI Golden Eagles faced an intense challenge in the first period, failing to score any points. However, they quickly turned the tide in the second period, with a brilliant assist from Tamsyn Evezard setting up Abby Mammen for the first CUI goal. Mammen continued her stellar performance, scoring another goal just a minute later, bringing the score to 2-11.
Samantha Rainey made a significant impact at the beginning of the third period, and Evezard's precise passing led to Tessa Tavaglione's goal. With only four minutes left in the third period, Tavaglione assisted senior Andie Perreira for yet another goal. Tess Henke extended CUI's score to five with a well-placed shot, assisted by Sofia Dominguez.
The momentum continued in the fourth period with Melinna Galbraith capitalizing on a power play opportunity, scoring the sixth goal for CUI. Sofia Smith added to the tally with a clear shot, and Cecilia Smith captured the final power play goal for Concordia.
Despite the loss, the CUI women's water polo will compete again on Friday, March 15 at 7 pm! Eight seniors will be recognized for their time spent at Concordia. Come down to the Woollett Aquatics Center and cheer on your Golden Eagles as they take on Bucknell.
Heads up: the first 100 students will receive a FREE Chick-Fil-A sandwich upon arrival!
